KINGSPORT — Police cars blocked access to Meadowview Parkway between Interstate 26 and Wilcox Drive on Saturday evening as the Kingsport Police Department investigated a shooting at MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center.

Few details were being released, but police said a single victim had been transported from the scene for medical treatment.

Social media posts from organizations hosting events indicated the incident had not stopped the show from going on inside.

By about 10:30 p.m., the convention center was “believed to have been rendered safe and has resumed normal business routines,” according to a press release from the Kingsport Police Department. “With the exception of one hallway where the aforementioned incident took place, the facility is back open.”

According to an initial press release from Kingsport Police Department Public Information Officer Tom M. Patton, issued and hour and a half earlier, it all started at approximately 7:30 p.m. That’s when Kingsport Police Department responded to a “shooting incident” at MeadowView, 1901 Meadowview Parkway. in Kingsport.

Patton’s press release stated a preliminary investigation had revealed the following:

• A criminal incident resulted in at least one gunshot being fired and at least one victim being struck by gunfire.

• That victim had been transported to an area health care facility for medical treatment.

• The suspect remained at large but was believed to have already left the scene.

• A strong police presence remained at the facility.

• The KPD Criminal Investigations Division was in the preliminary stages of its investigation into the incident.

Patton said additional information would be released at the appropriate point in the investigation.

Patton’s release also urged anyone not at the facility to please stay away to allow the police to investigate the incident without interference. It also instructed anyone at the facility to please specifically follow all instructions from the police and hotel staff to the letter.

The second press release, at about 10:30 p.m. noted “... people are still being asked to stay away from the facility unless they have a specific need to be there, as an active criminal investigation is still underway.”

The 11th annual “Dancing with the Tri-Cities Stars” charity event was taking place Saturday evening at MeadowView, and the show went on, according to the event’s Facebook page. A post there stated, “There's been some concern about a situation at Meadowview tonight and we want you to know all is well, guests and dancers are fine and well.”
