Rogersville Heritage Days: Everything you need to know about the quilting show

STAFF REPORT • Oct 5, 2018 at 11:28 AM

History, music and fun on Rogersville Heritage Days schedule

ROGERSVILLE — When reflecting upon this year’s theme “The People of Our Heritage,” the people who come to mind are those who got us to where we are – the farmers, the carpenters, the trailblazers, the pioneers. However, one would be remiss if one didn’t also remember the people of our heritage that held things together – the homemakers, the first responders, the healers.

And a bit of glue for all of those of our heritage, and yes, not all have been listed here, are those pioneer women that cooked meals, made clothing and of, course, made quilts.

Quilting has been a longstanding way of life for centuries.

Some things have faded away over all of these years, but the art of quilting is alive and well, even in Rogersville. The 39th Annual Rogersville Heritage Days Quilt Show, sponsored by Hawkins County Gas Company, will again be held in the Courthouse during Heritage Days. There, visitors will experience the expertise and creativity of local quilters whose quilts will be on display.

Years, even decades ago, quilts were hand sewn from any fabrics that were available to their creators. In today’s world, these quilts are made from all sorts of prints, patterns and methods. The quilt show this year has a little bit of something for everyone.

On display will be quilts that are the entries into the competition.

Additionally, The Rogersville Heritage Association has partnered with the Rogersville group, the Happy Hearts Quilt Guild, where members will display their challenge quilts. This year’s challenge consists of a mandatory state block, with a required piece of fabric that has been provided to the members and also color requirements for each member.

There will also be a Quilts of Valor display with Quilts of Valor representatives available to provide information. For those who want to actually see quilts from the People of Our Heritage, there will be an exhibition of antique quilts.

Deadline for entries is Oct. 8. Applications for the Quilt Show are available at The Heritage Association’s office, Hale Springs Inn, U-Save Pharmacy, Mountain Star Mall, Local Artist Gallery, First Community Bank, the Rogersville Review or request on-line at battshott@aol.com. Should you have any questions contact the Quilt Show Co-Chairs: Tillie Richardson at 423-923-3636 or Cheryl Battaglia at 281-782-0802.
